For 12 years I had the pleasure of studying with the late Kuk Sul’s Grandmaster Moon Sung Bong. Grandmaster Moon was born in Seoul, South Korea. He began his martial art training at the age of eight. He lived in a dojang (Korean training hall) practicing constantly until there was no day or night. After 22 years of intense training he became eighth degree Grandmaster, at the unusually young age of 30. He crossed-trained in Kung Fu, Hapkido, Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Judo. In his early 30’s, Grandmaster Moon formed his own martial art system known as Kuk Sul Hapkido.

He was chosen to become the Imperial palace instructor for the Shah of Iran, training his Imperial guards. The Grandmaster studied the Iranian language for one year, then moved to Iran. .

When the Shah's regime was overthrown, Grandmaster Moon went west, to America. He opened his World Headquarters in Reseda, California. Grandmaster Moon exemplifies what is right about a martial arts master; being kind, humble and always willing to help his students. He appeared on numerous magazine covers and gave many seminars to martial artists who came to train with him from around the world.

In the spring of 1991, Supreme Grandmaster Moon was shot and killed in China town Los Angeles, California. He is missed by us and his family.- Master Q Shenasai
