Reiki (霊気) plainly means spiritual practice originated by Mikao Usui.(臼井甕男) in 1926 . Mikao Usui, the founding father of modern day Reiki, actually attuned himself to Reiki when he was on Mount Kurama in Japan After weeks of fasting and meditation Mikao Usui claimed to receive the ability to heal when experienced a sudden flash of profound understanding and awareness- a Satori if you will, about how a particular aspect of the vital life force energy already flowing within him that could easily be accessed and used for healing and self-realization.

Mikao Usui claimed to use his palms to direct ki or chi (universal healing energy) for healing purposes Usui summarized some of his works into a set of ethical principles, which later became known as the Reiki Principles. ("GOKAI" in Japanese)
