Jeet Kune Do or JKD, is a martial arts and philosophy developed by the late martial artist and
actor Bruce Lee in 1967.
Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, is the name that refers to the art itself as taught and intended by Bruce Lee in his lifetime. "Jun Fan" was Bruce Lee's Chinese given name, so Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do literal translates to "Bruce Lee's Way of the Intercepting Fist." Initially, when Bruce Lee began exploring martial arts, he gave his martial art his own name of Jun Fan Gung Fu. JKD as it is known today .
Jeet Kune Do or JKD is the kung fu system that was born from Lee's idea to take the best of Wing Chun Kung Fu, American Boxing, French Fencing and Grappling to bring them together as the fundamental combat art.
Bruce Lee, and thus JKD, was greatly influenced by Western boxing and fencing. While the backbone idea (such as centerline, vertical punching, and forward pressure) come from Wing Chun, Lee stopped using the Wing Chun stances in favor of what he claimed were more fluid and flexible fencing and boxing stances.
Bruce Lee wanted to create a martial art that was unbounded and free. In a 1971 Black Belt Magazine article, Lee said "Let it be understood once and for all that I have NOT invented a new style, composite or modification. I have in no way set Jeet Kune Do within a distinct form governed by laws that distinguish it from 'this' style or 'that' method. On the contrary, I hope to free my comrades from bondage to styles.
