Karate or karate-do is a martial art of Ryukyuan . Karate developed from a mixture of native
Ryukyuan fighting methods and southern Chinese martial arts. Karate originally meant
hand which was later changed to a homonym ( Japanese). meaning 'empty hand' It is
known primarily as a striking art, featuring punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes
and open handed techniques. Karate literally means way of empty hand, Japan created many martial art systems such as sumo wrestling, judo, ju-jitsu,and ken-jitsu.
The Japanese Budokai was a martial arts association, maintained by the government,
which encouraged these traditional martial arts.
Karate is synonymous with martial arts and self defense all over the world. Even though karate is an ancient art of weaponless combat is not the first form
There were other ancient art of weaponless combat systems which were developed
that may have contributed to modern-day karate they were:
India seems to have been the origin for some ancient forms of weaponless combat,
which became the basis for what is know known as kung fu.
It is acknowledged that kung fu had its roots in the Buddhist temples in India around
450 A.D.
Kung fu the mother of all contemporary martial arts was brought to China from India by
a Zen Buddhist monk named Da Mo (Bodhidharma). A weapon-leas form of martial art called VaJra-mushti, which was

Goju Ryu karate is a mixture of hard and soft systems of martial arts that was
originated in China. Goju Ryu karate was created in 1930 by Goju Ryu (1888-1953)
Shotokan (Sho-to-kan) is a style of karate,
that was formed from numerous martial arts by master Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) Gichin Funakoshi brought karate from Okinawa to mainland Japan. Funakoshi In 1936, at the age of 70 opened his doju. His school was called Shotokan. Shotokan Karate is distinguished
by powerful techniques and low strong stances.
Shito-Ryu karate was developed in
1931 by Kenwa Mabuni.(1889-1952) Shito-ryu karate uses many forms (kata)
(more than fifty) with an emphasis on strength and power in the implementation
of techniques
Wado-ryu karate or Wadoryu karate means 'way of harmony ,is a system of karate originated from jujitsu that was
founded in 1939 by Hienori Otsuka
Kenpo karate or Kempo karate("fist principles" or "way of the fist )is a universal
Japanese phrase for martial arts in general
